Hosting the Holidays in Your Apartment

ba99ff6bc2e24f591ae05ac8247634c7275e72cfIt’s the holiday season. With that comes thoughts of family dinners around the table, sharing stories and renewing relationships. Yet when it’s your turn to host the holidays, and you live in an apartment, what can you do? Here are some tips to make the most out of your space as you welcome friends or family for the holidays:

1. Rearrange the Furniture

One of the fastest ways to manufacture more space in an apartment floor plan is to open it up by rearranging the furnishings. For example, move your couches into the bedroom for the evening, and then set up a dining space in your living room. Everyone will have more space to spread out, and you can throw a leaf into the table to make it just a little more spacious.

2. Ask Others to Contribute

As an apartment resident, you may have a little less space to put out a full spread. If your counter space is not sufficient for cooking turkey with all of the fixings you’re planning, consider asking your guests to contribute to the meal. You can cook up the main dish, and the sides can come from your guests. This frees you from some of the stress of the day, and also frees your counter space to hold already-cooked food.

3. Use Fridge Space Wisely

Your fridge space may be limited. In the weeks before you host, try to clean out all of the leftovers. Then, make sure that you aren’t taking up fridge space with packaging. Pre-wash and prep your foods to ensure that you aren’t filling the fridge with unnecessary packaging.

4. Make Ahead

Some items can be prepped ahead and frozen for the big day. Pie, cranberry sauce and some baked goods can easily be made ahead and stored, freeing your pre-party time (and space) for the items that have to be made that day.

5. Serve Food Buffet Style

Instead of putting all of the food on the table to dine, consider serving it “buffet style.” This will free up more space for your lovely place settings on your dining room table. Remember, it’s about spending time together much more than having the perfect table setting!
